Can I make my own Combination Chemical Filter Media for my turtle?

by Superman the Turtle
(Lindenwold, NJ)

Currently I use the Rena Filstar Bio-Chem Zorb as my filter. I was wondering if I would be able to make my own at home? I read that the product is a combination chemical filter media made of a variety of Research-Grade Organic Scavenger Resins, Natural ion-exchange Resin, and High-porosity activated carbon. Is this possible?

Also, Is ther another type of Water Conditioner Dechlorinator I can use in my turtle tank besides the Flucker's brand? I noticed the Fluker's brand has Aloe Vera to help with shedding. I want to be careful with the shell of the turtle. I am not sure if the shell is considered a crustation.

Thank you :-)

A: API patented the use of Aloe Vera in a dechlorinator way back in the day. It is called Stress Coat and is the largest selling water treatment on the market. You'll find the large size here. As for making your own BioChem it is very difficult to do since the formulation is proprietary. The main advantage of pre-measured pouches
is convenience. You can certainly buy media in bulk and fill your own pouches but most people just don't want to do that.
