Energy Usage

I have a Rena Filstar XP2 and I was wondering how much power/energy it is using to run.
That Pet Place website said it was 16 watts/HOUR, but I wanted to double check with someone. I thought it sounded low only because it's mechanical. I was thinking 16 watts/minute. Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out. Thank you so much in advance!!

A: 16 watts sounds about right but you might want to ask the manufacturer, MARS Fishcare, this question. To figure usage: Watts x Hours Operated Per Day x 30 days in billing cycle = Total Watts Used. Divide this by 1000 to get Kilowatt Hours (units your power companies charges you for). Most folks pay between 8-18 cents per KWH. So in your example 16 x 24 x 30 = 11520 watts used in 30
days. Divided x 1000 = 11.52 KWH x .10=1.15 per month to operate. The magnetic drive pumps used in the Rena Filstar Canister Filters are very energy efficient and reliable considering they operate 24/7.

What is a watt - explanation

A "watt" is a measurement of power. There is no implied duration for the measurement. If the equipment operates for one hour at 23 watts, then the total power used is 23 "watt-hours" (23 watts times 1 hour). If it operates for 10 hours at 23 watts, the total power used is 230 watt-hours (23 watts times 10 hours).

The electricity used in your home is priced and measured in "kilowatt-hours." The trick to understanding kilowatt-hours is knowing that 1000 watts of power used for a duration of 1 hours is 1 kilowatt-hour, or 500 watts used for 2 hours is 1 kilowatt-hour, or 100 watts used for 10 hours is a kilowatt-hour.

The calculation of the watts from the device (23 watts in this case) times 24 hours/day times 30 days/month gives you the total watt-hours used in a month (16,560). Dividing the total watt-hours by 1000 converts to kilowatt-hours (16.56 KWH) per month. Multiplying that by your electric company's rate per KWH tells you the cost of running the pump for 1 month. My electric rate is something like $0.13/KWH, so my cost would be about $2.15 (16.56 KWH times $0.13/KWH equals about $2.15).

Thanks for your comment. I did end up calling about it and found the wattage use on the motor on the back of the unit. It's actually 23 watts, not 16. Also, I asked the guy on the phone about calculating and he said I couldn't use that calculation, but honestly I think he was wrong. I did that and it only costs me $2.78 to run for 30 days. We pay a little more in energy. Thanks for the response I really do appreciate it!!
