Green water

by Linda Morrison
(Glasgow)

I have had a Rena Filstar xp2 for 8 years with no problems. I have changed the filter media regularly but not the rotor or any of the main components of the filter. Could this be why my tank is always green even after water changes. Its a coldwater tank. Do i need a new filter?
Thanks alot
Linda morrison
A: Green water is caused by Algae growing in the tank. If this has never happened before in 8 years then count yourself lucky. This is a complex issue and can be caused by many issues some related to the age of the tank and some possibly due to a decrease in the filter performance. My best advice is to test the water and see what shows up then work with your local dealer to fix the problems.

Lessons learned about pea soup

In your filter media add something specifically for absorbing phosphates. Also, if you don't have live plants you can leave the lights off for a week. If you do have live plants then add plant food (when plants grow rapidly they absorb the nutrients that algae grows from).

Never have your lights shine for more than 12 hours, you can safely reduce them to 8 hours too - but don't do this if you add plant food. It's an either-or proposition.

Also make sure that sunshine never directly touches the tank or reflects off a wall onto the tank in concentrated form. Since I moved my tank away from windows I've never had green water.
