Help! Filstar stopped working

The water intake came loose and floated off, disconnecting the filter from the tank's water supply. This happened in my son's room and I don't know how long the Filstar ran without water. I unplugged it and tried to get it running again. The filter hums but does not pump water. A: It is always difficult to take over for someone else in this situation.
