MEDIA SET UP
by: JOEY

I have a 29 gallon sps reef tank. (saltwater). I am using huge amount of lighting for this tank just over 400W Elos MH. i am getting huge amounts of algea because of this. i was wondering what would be the best set-up for media in the xp-1 to relieve this problem.

A: The lighting will always create a problem for you but from the standpoint of the filter, you will need to take a look at the food source available in the tank by running a good battery of tests. We recommend the API Reefmaster test kit. Your are looking for nitrate and phosphate which are the main sources of food for the algae. The best method for reducing and removing this with a Rena Filstar XP1 filter is to make sure the top half of the media
basket a full layer of either the BioChem Stars or BioCeramic media. In addition, depending on what you find in your tests, you need to change the BioChem Zorb frequently. This removes all organic compounds with both a carbon and ion exchange resins contained BioChem Zorb. Frequent partial water changes will also reduce nitrates. In the end, you might have to consider a supplemental filter such as proteing skimmer as well.
