How much Cermamic/Bio Chem stars do i need for the XP3 filter.

I bought the XP3 filstart filter yesterday and it came with only 12 Bio Chem Stars. I'm thinking im going to need more than that. I have a 120 Gallong tank with cichlids of all sorts from Sout America. Also it mentioned about the ceramic rings. Which is better to use and how much do i need?
A: If you have an extra compartment you aren't using then I recommend filling the middle basket with either stars and/or rings. No set system but the more the better.
