I was given a saltwater tank with a filstar filter, can I use it with fresh water tank?

I was given a complete salt water aquarium setup. It hasnt been used in probably 5 years. I want to set it up as a freshwater tank. Can I use the filter for it? Would I have to flush it?

A: It is fine to use it in a Freshwater tank. However, any filter used in another tank should be thoroughly cleaned before using to make sure any bacteria or other pathogens don't remain on or in the filter.
