I was given a saltwater tank with a filstar filter, can I use it with fresh water tank?

I was given a complete salt water aquarium setup. It hasnt been used in probably 5 years. I want to set it up as a freshwater tank. Can I use the filter for it? Would I have to flush it?
thanks,
Andrew
A: It is fine to use it in a Freshwater tank. However, any filter used in another tank should be thoroughly cleaned before using to make sure any bacteria or other pathogens don't remain on or in the filter. Depending on wear you should consider replacing the filter media also. You can find all parts and filter media at PlanetRena Direct.
