In-Line UV Sterilizer

by Mike
(Gaithersburg, MD)

Is it possible to put a UV sterilizer directly into the intake/return line on my XP3 filter (assuming that the UV is capable of handling 350gph) or is a separate headpump adviseable?

If it is possible without negatively affecting the flow, should it go on the intake line or return?

Thanks for your help!
Mike

A: We are not big fans of UV's but many folks like them. They can be integrated into the discharge line of the Rena Filstar XP. However, once you alter the setup you won't be able to get technical support from the manufacturer. They don't support third-party add-ons or non-standard setups. It will also reduce the flow somewhat depending on how many turns and twists the water must go through before exiting the UV. So, we would recommend a second pump to run the UV for the best results.

hi, i read in a previous comment that you don't recommend in-line uv sterilizers and was just wondering if you could elaborate on the reasons for me. i'm extremely happy with what my xp3 has achieved for my tank so would really like your input on my research prior to picking up a uvs. thanks, kiel

A: We don't recommend them as they add one more layer of complexity to your system. So if something is not right with flow or other performance issues you now have one more place you will have to look and eliminate. Also, uv bulbs have to be changed more frequently than most people believe adding more costs. If all you want to do is control algae then there are a number of things you can do to prevent algae growth naturally without resorting to adding more equipment.
