Is it safe to put in a Bio Chem Zorb pouch?

by Mia
(Alberta, Canada)

I had to replace the Rena Chrystal and I could not get to a store that sold it, so I bought the Bio Chem Zorb instead. Within a week I had an ammonia spike and within 2 wks I lost several fish. I am wondering if it had something to do with that pouch although I believe it is supposed to contain the same stuff. Can you give any insight on this for me?
A: The units come with BioChem Zorb from the factory (called Rena Crystal in Europe). I have seen situations where the chemical media is saturated and releases stuff back into the tank. Also, if during your cleaning you somehow destroyed a lot of the bacteria on the Bio Chem stars or the foam filters this could also affect ammonia levels.

Further clarification
by: Mia

Hi again.....ok, to be clear, the BioChem Zorb I put in was a different brand altogether then the Rena Chrystal, so 1) is if I must use the Rena brand or is it safe to use another brand.
2) You said I could have destroyed good bacteria on the stars....I rinsed them very well. Am I not supposed to do that?
3) I also rinsed and squeezed the foam very well. Is that wrong? I felt it was so dirty that it required it. Is that not so?
4) When I put down the lever of the Filstar after doing the cleaning, the output pipe/tube visibly released clouds dirty water. I can't imagine that this is normal and it has happened twice. What should I do about that? Is that a sign that there is something wrong with the filter? What would cause that to happen?
A: Much of this info is already in the Q&A's posted here. Also you might try contacting the manufacturer, Mars Fishcare, directly. And finally, by posting this comment here maybe one of other Rena Filstar XP users might offer you some other help.
