Is my filtration options for the Rena XP3 fully interchangeable?

Can I use bio-balls, carbon, etc?
A: All of the Rena Filstar XP filters come with a basic setup that includes mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. This is usually good for 80% + of aquarium setups. For those hobbyists that have particular setup requirements or are dealing with specific water quality issues other options are available. An XP3 has 6 compartments for media but only comes with enough media to fill 5. This leaves one open compartment. Beyond the basic setup from the factory you could also change the quantities and type of media to tweak the setup for your aquarium.
