My Rena Filstar XP2 sucks up the food

by KIm B.
(Ohio)

I have a 55 gallon aquarium and I feed bloodworms to the fish which are constantly being sucked up by the XP2 before they can get to them sometimes. Should I unplug the filter while feeding and if so do I have to prime it every time?? They Xp filters in the canister are only 1-2 weeks old. Thanks!!
A: You can put a filter sleeve over the intake which is one way to prevent this. If the worms get sucked into the filter you can rinse them during normal cleaning. You could also shut off the filter during feeding and as long as it is priming and flowing properly you will not lose "prime". If water stays in the hose on the intake side you should be able to restart with no problem.

Turning Filters off for feeding
by: David

I have an xp2 & xp3 running a 105 gal fresh water tank, which get turned off twice a day for feeding. I've never had a primimng issue & no food is ever wasted either.

Barbara,

I think you've been very lucky with your tank because nitrifying bacteria need oxygen to survive and those bacteria that are supposed to thrive within your pump get the oxygen from the water circulating through the pump. In fact, Hagen, for example, warns not to shut off the power to their power heads that utilize their Quick Filters for more than an hour or the bacteria on the pad will die. I suspect you have other surfaces in your tank on which the good bacteria are growing to compensate for your not having them growing in your filter.

filter sucking up food
by: Barbara

I turn my filter off every night for feeding, and have done that for three years. It does not seem to have negatively impacted the filter.
