New Rena Filstar XP2 Installed and Fish Died

by Ronnette Anderson
(Logan, Utah)

I have just recently installed my xp2 filter system into my 35 gallon hex tank . The tank has been running for about a week. Transferred my fish from one tank to another and within 5 minutes they were all dead. I have never had a system like this one so I don't know if this would have something to do with the filter system? The water seems a little cloudy and I can't tell if the intake is as strong as I feel it should be. What approach can I take with this to make sure the intake is pulling as much as it should?

A: Without any kind of water quality measurement I can't really say what caused the fish kill. I have had reports of people switching from a mature aquarium system to a new system with some loss of fish. Generally, this has been caused by lack of aeration in the new aquarium. Most aquariums can benefit from supplemental aeration regardless of what type of filter system is used. You really should contact the place where you purchased the filter for information on the cause as they are more familiar with your setup. I would also recommend contacting the manufacturer of the filter, Mars Fishcare about this event.
