Plumbing for XP3 in reef ready tank?

by Joe
(Lancaster, PA, USA)

I have used the XP2 and XP3 canisters successfully with 46gal. and 70gal. saltwater tanks in the past. Both tanks included very healthy live rock, fish and invertebrates. My 70 gal. tank even housed small live sponges. Neither of the aquariums was reef-ready (i.e. drilled for a sump, etc.). I've ordered a new 70gal. reef ready tank with a corner overflow and plan to use the XP3. Is plumbing for such a set-up realistic or will I need to replace the XP3 with a sump? Any advice will be appreciate.

Thanks!

A:The Rena Filstar XP canister filters come with basic plumbing for common setups. If you need to drill the tank for fittings and plumbing the you will probably have to make your own inlet and outlet fittings. The biggest problem will be duplicating the self-priming system.
