Pump ran dry

Hi there,
My intake line drew in a bunch of air over night. I am unsure how long the pump was running 'dry'. I reconnected, refilled/primed the filter (after cleaning it out). However, the pump is not moving water.
I have tried several times.
The input and output lines are filled.
Canister is clean and full of water.
On start up, I can hear the impeller, but the water is not moving.
When I found the filter this morning, it was noisy (which was why I checked). I could hear the impeller rattling.
I have pulled the impeller, and there does not seem to be any obvious damage.
When running it seems to run smooth, but it does sputter a bit every now and then. I tried letting it run for 5 minutes to see if it would go, but no movement of water seems to be happening.
Would running it dry have an effect on the impeller's ability to move water? IE: reduce it's efficiency?
The Rena XP2 is about 6 years old, and to date, it has run like a top with no problems.
Any advice is appreciated.
