Rena Filstar xp 3

by Aneik Koerper
(Cave Creek, AZ)

I have a rena filstar xp 3 on my 60 gallon plant tank. It is about 7 years old. The flow rate does not see as strong as it used to be and does not seem to be working properly. Every minute or so it will blow air into the tank for a few seconds. I dont know where air is getting into the filter. How long do filters usually last? which part needs to be replaced in order to gain the flow rate it used to have?
Thank you,
Aneil

A: There are probably a lot of things that are going wrong at once in a filter that is 7 years old. If you have never replaced anything it might be cheaper to purchase an identical filter and keep your old filter for parts. If you want to purchase parts, the most obvious for filter exhibiting the symptoms you mention is a new rotor/impeller and Oring kit.
