I can not find in the instructions, should the pin that the impeller sits on have a rubber end on both ends or just in the end opposite to the cap, or in reverse just in the cap?
A: Depends on how old your filter is. Early versions had a different setup. Later versions have a "bushing" at either end of the shaft. Sometimes these come out when you remove the rotor/impeller. Rarely need replacing unless lost.

Rena Filstar XP "black plug" in motor by: Bill
I did not mention the "black plug" since this is a very rare occurance for this to be missing. Certainly if the black plug (an air release valve) is missing the unit will not likely prime. Also, you want to make sure that the area around the plug is not clogged with algae/mineral deposits preventing air in the canister from escaping as water is siphoned from the aquarium.

Rena Not Pumping At All - Had Same Problem by: Anonymous
I had this problem when I purchased my XP2. The unit was missing a little black plug inside the upper motor housing. The impeller would spin, but no water movement at all. If you remove the upper unit and you don not see a small black plastic plug then this could be your issue, too.
Store gave me another from a unit they had for sale and I was in business.

Filter is not priming properly by: Bill
If the motor is running but the water is not siphoning from the aquarium into the filter this will break the siphoning and the pump will push water through the filter. Please review the most Frequently Asked Question section at the bottom of this page. This problem is covered.
