Rena Filstar XP3 filters / pouch

by marcus
(tacoma, wa. usa)

i really like this filter system, but dont know if I have it set up right for my turtle. he is in a 55 gallon long and I have it more then half fall of water. I own an xp3, right now I have it set up top and ceramic rings, about full in the basket, then carbon ( can't find the right size pouches - 6"x6"), them on the bottom 30ppi and on top of that 20ppi foams. the baskets and the spacers are curving not laying flat any more. what would work better?
1.Filstar Super Activited Carbon Pouch
2.Filstar Nitra Zorb Pouch
3.Filstar Bio-Chem Zorb Pouch

A: First, I would suggest reading through the Q&A section devoted to alternative setups. You will find info on turtle setups and ideas that have worked for other people. Secondly, unless you know what problems you are having with your water quality you won't be able to determine the best setup. So a good idea is to test the water and see what kinds of organic substances might be present. In general, turtle tanks have color and odor problems due to the high level of organic waste produced by turtles. The best setup is to start with the one from the factory and add the Filstar Activated carbon pouch to the mix. Some folks devote more space to biological filters and eliminate the BioChem Zorb ompletely. If your baskets and grids are warped you might need to replace them.
