Rena Filstar XP3 won't start after running dry

my filter is about 6 months old - it's the x3.When I was at work, my turtle knocked the intake apart and the filter ran dry, probably for several hours. when I came home, it was just making little noises. He's done this before, but always, it has restarted. I unplugged it, rested it for over 24 hours, and have cleaned the entire assembly, but it won't start at all. (somehow, in the whole debacle, something plugged into the same extension cord also seems broken, though the extension cord itself works fine). It doesn't even seem to prime properly. What can I do to fix this?

thanx.

A: The motor contains a thermal overload switch to prevent overheating to the point of causing a fire. So, sometimes this switch will reset but if the unit overheats to the point the switch is destroyed then you will need to replace the motor and possibly the rotor/impeller.
