Should I be able to see a water line in the filter tank?

by Bill
(MO)

We've had aquarium and xP2 filter now for two months and are having trouble with ammonia and nitrite levels. I was trying to determine if filtration was working properly and noticed that I could see a water line about 1" from top of canister and I can't tell if water is flowing through filter properly. Is this normal to see a water line with air within the canister?

A: No, you should not see a water line in the canister with an air bubble at the top. Maybe a small amount of air when first starting the system but generally this goes away. This air bubble is usually a symptom of air leaking into the system. The first thing you need to do is read through the posts to find what other people have done to solve the issue. water line in xp 3 and xp 4
by: rich

Hi :) I have an xp3 and 2 xp4s. The water line is normal and contrary to othe post this does not go away all my filters are less than 1yr old. All seals are in tact and seated proper. I have no air leaks anywhere I checked every where it could be leaking. I do not have any air pumping from any other source. Like an air stone ect. I bought all 3 pumps from the same place. I also have a friend that has an xp3 and xp4 and has the same level of water in his. I even put teflon tape on the cap of the prime spout. I also get air bubbles every so often. Also if you fill the canister over what is in the above pic it will leak from the power cord. I know this because I tried filling it to the top manually and all 3 systems leaked. I called the manufacture and was told it is normal. There is no solution to a flaw in the way it was made. I have tried every suggestion and nothing takes the water line up or the bubbles from coming out of the outtake spray bar. Sorry for all of the bad news.

EDITOR: If your filter primes and works fine with an air pocket in the top don't sweat it. I know many owners that tell me this. However, if water leaks out around the power cord this is where the air is getting in as well.

This situation is covered in many places in the FAQ section and has to do with air and water leaking around the quick disconnect. If you think this is a flaw in the design you should be directing your comments to the manufacturer, Mars Fishcare if you haven't already done this.
