stops working periodically

My XP3 stops working periodically. I've been having the issue for the past week or so. It will run for a day or two and then suddenly get really loud, start rattling, and will stop syphoning the water. I think something is up with the impeller for when I open the cover, the impeller cap (black rubber cap) is often stuck inside the cover. Should I just replace the cap? I've taken off the 0-ring - it seems fine, so I put it back in and made sure it was snug.

The filter just seems so noisy anymore, so something must be happening to let air in.

A: It could be a number things including the filter is not priming properly on restart, filters although clean may be restricting flow, etc. There have been a number of Q&A's already posted on this subject. Here are some links to those sections:
