Water backs up... xp4

I purchased a xp4 last summer so its not that old. It had worked very well until recently, within the past month, water has been backing up into the filter. It made a noise like it was struggling to work, I saw the water level in my tank lower significantly, and as a result the carpet around the aquarium was flooded. I have 2 turtles which I know are very messy but I take care to clean the filter canister and its components, as well as flush the hoses and even pull out the little spinning magnet with fins. I was wondering what was wrong with the filter and if it was something that could be fixed. I would hate to buy another filter since this one cost a pretty penny...
A: I can only guess but it sounds like either a bad (or clogged) Quick Disconnect or the QD is not locking into the top of the filter properly. The best place to get answers to this type question is from the dealer where you purchased the filter as they would be more familiar with your setup and the species you are keeping.
