Water backs up... xp4

by Michael
(Pomona, California)

I purchased a xp4 last summer so its not that old. It had worked very well until recently, within the past month, water has been backing up into the filter. It made a noise like it was struggling to work, I saw the water level in my tank lower significantly, and as a result the carpet around the aquarium was flooded. I have 2 turtles which I know are very messy but I take care to clean the filter canister and its components, as well as flush the hoses and even pull out the little spinning magnet with fins. I was wondering what was wrong with the filter and if it was something that could be fixed. I would hate to buy another filter since this one cost a pretty penny...

A: I can only guess but it sounds like either a bad (or clogged) Quick Disconnect or the QD is not locking into the top of the filter properly. The best place to get answers to this type question is from the dealer where you purchased the filter as they would be more familiar with your setup and the species you are keeping. Also, here is a link to some turtle tank setup questions asked by ohers.

The quick disconnect doesn't even come off. I can't go to the dealer because it was purchased online. How would I fix the quick disconnect problem? I noticed yesterday that the water level goes up and down inside the canister until it gets completely filled, then it stops pumping water.

A: Michael, this appears to be a problem with the quick-disconnect. When you say it does not "come out" just make sure that the handle is all the way back before attempting to remove it. Secondly, you may to wiggle it side to side a little to break the seal to get it to come out. You will never be able to clean the filter properly if the quick disconnect can't be remved.
