when i clean the filter and then turn it on what is the white guck that comes out of the out flow

by russ mcgivern
(canada)

After cleaning my filter i am curious when I turn it on what is the white guck that comes out back into the aquarium. Is it from the hoses and does it hurt the fish or it sucked back in to the filter.
A: This is usually mineral deposits/organic material that clings to the inside of the plastic outflow parts. It is harmless but you should be checking water quality on a regular basis to make sure nothing is in the water that can harm your fish.

White Cloud
by: dshipl01

I have an XP3 and noticed this stuff coming out after a cleaning and starting back up. I use a section of pantyhose and pull it over the spraybar before I start the filter up. All of this white stuff collects in the stocking and I just slide it off, wash and use it the next cleaning. Hope this helps...

Clean Filstar Hoses
by: GTZ

Simply run the canister (without baskets) with a bucket acting as the aquarium. Fill with hot water and bleach, 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, and run for a few hours. Empty the filter and bucket and run again for a few hours using water and a double dose of dechlorinator. I've been doing this with no problem for a few years.

Tube Cleaning
by: David

I have an XP2 & an XP3 running a 105 gal tank filled with large goldfish. I have to clean both the inlet & outlet tubes every couple of weeks, using a 42" long wire handle soft bristled brush. Otherwise, like you said you get lots of guck.
