Why are Rena Filstar Rotor/Impellers so expensive?

by Justin
(MN)

I had my Rena Filstar XP3 for only a few months and my impeller broke on me. The plastic on one end of the magnet separated from the magnet & would not longer allow the unit to operate. I noticed the replacement impellers are ridiculously expensive ($25.95 or more online) for a magnet and piece of plastic, so I repaired mine, and it seemed to work fine again for about a week, then the other end of the impeller broke off in the same manner as the first side had. I want to get a replacement, but I am wondering if this is a reocurring problem with these impellers or if I just got a bad egg? Also, you may not have this info, but why are they so expensive? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! ps, I love the units convenience otherwise, so I'm hoping I didnt blow hundreds on buying one only to have to go back to Fluval or some other brand.

A: Rotor/Impellers should last 4-5 years or more. If an impeller breaks apart after such a short time is was either defective when you purchased it (rare) or in our experience the impeller was running "hot" for a period of time. View our short video for additional information. If you consider the rotor is built to last 4-5 years minimum, then $5.00 per year in maintenance cost for the only moving part in the motor has never seemed out of line.
