Why is the discharge tube full of "stuff"

by Gayle
(California)

I have an XP2 I loved it! It has been 8 months since I installed it in my 30 gallon tank. both the intake and discharge tubes were full of debris and were almost clogged. I managed to free some of it but.... My tank is now gross and I don't kow how to correct the problem.

I am more curious to know how debris would get into the discharge tube. Should be clean going thru the filter media I would think.

Thanks in advance for you help

Gayle

A: This most often happens when the filters are clogged or old. Water bypasses the filters to prevent the motor from burning out. Deposits of algae and minerals will also cling to the inside walls and be discharged when a filter is cleaned or restarted after cleaning.
