Why is there water leaking from the hinges on my Rena Filstar XP?

I cleaned out my filter and did nothing different then I usually do. I have done this many times and I am confident I know what I am doing. When I push the lever down on my quick disconnect valve water begins to leak from the hinges on the lid. Why is it doing this?
A: If you have done this many times then something is preventing the top (motor) from fully sealing to the canister. Even though the clips are locked they have a certain tolerance so they don't break when attaching the motor to the canister with the baskets slightly out of alignment. If you are pre-filling the cansiter after cleaning, this can sometimes cause this leak and is a common mistake.
