XP4 impeller cover vibrates loose

by Jon
(Lowell,MA usA)

I have an XP4, probably about 1 1/2 years old. It has worked fine until just recently when it started making a loud rattling sound and stopped pumping. Upon investigation I discovered the impeller cover had come off and the impeller had fallen out of the motor housing. I re-assembled everything, but when I power up the motor the impeller cover continues to vibrate loose and the impeller assembly falls out. What can I do to fix this problem?

A: The cheap fix is to wrap some plumbers tape around the edge of the impeller cover. This will allow the impeller cover to lock into the rotor well and stay. The expensive fix is to replace the motor and impeller cover. You might want to do this if the motor ran hot for a long period of time. This can warp either the cover and/or motor so the cover never fits properly. This can also cause the rotor well area to warp which will affect priming and performance overall. If you decide to replace the motor do it soon by contacting the manufacturer and claiming a replacement under the warranty which is two years. You can reach them at 800-847-0659. Make sure you have a receipt and explain you want to return the motor under the warranty.
